Storage Alperton Health and Safety Policy
Storage Alperton is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all employees, customers, visitors, and contractors. This policy sets out our approach to health and safety in our storage facilities and in connection with our removal and handling activities. We aim to prevent accidents, protect property, and promote a culture in which safety is a shared responsibility.
Policy Aims and Objectives
The objectives of this Health and Safety Policy are to prevent injury and ill health, comply with applicable health and safety legislation, manage risks associated with storage and removal activities, and continually improve our safety performance. We actively encourage feedback from staff and customers to help identify hazards and opportunities for improvement.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management has overall responsibility for implementing this policy and ensuring health and safety is integrated into all aspects of our business operations. Management will provide appropriate resources, training, and supervision to enable employees to work safely and will review this policy regularly to ensure it remains effective and relevant.
Managers are responsible for carrying out suitable and sufficient risk assessments for activities within our storage facilities and for removal and transport operations, ensuring that findings are communicated and that appropriate control measures are in place. They will also ensure that all incidents, near misses, and hazards are recorded, investigated where necessary, and used as a basis for continuous improvement.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees are required to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. This includes following all safety procedures and instructions, using equipment correctly, reporting hazards or unsafe conditions, and cooperating with management in implementing health and safety measures.
Employees involved in the handling, lifting, and moving of goods, including removal services, must follow manual handling guidance, use equipment provided for safe lifting, and seek assistance when loads are heavy, bulky, or awkward. Employees must not misuse or interfere with any equipment provided for health and safety purposes.
Customer and Visitor Safety
Storage Alperton is committed to providing a safe environment for customers and visitors using our facilities. Customers must comply with site rules, signage, and any instructions given by staff for their safety and the safety of others. This includes driving carefully on site, parking only in designated areas, and observing loading bay rules.
Children and pets must be supervised at all times and are not permitted in loading, unloading, or operational areas where there is a risk of injury. Customers are responsible for ensuring their goods are packed, stacked, and stored safely within their units and that no prohibited or hazardous items are stored on site.
Safe Storage and Handling of Goods
To reduce risks associated with storage and removal activities, Storage Alperton requires that goods are stored and handled safely at all times. Customers and staff must avoid overloading units, racking, or trolleys, and should ensure heavier items are placed at the bottom of stacks with lighter items on top. Aisles and access routes must be kept clear to prevent slips, trips, and falls.
Items that are sharp, fragile, or of irregular shape must be packed and secured to reduce the chance of damage or injury. Where removal or transport services are provided, goods must be loaded and secured in vehicles in a way that prevents movement during transit.
Prohibited and Hazardous Materials
Certain items must not be stored in our facilities or transported as part of our removal services. These may include flammable, explosive, toxic, corrosive, or otherwise hazardous materials that pose a risk to people, property, or the environment. Perishable goods, live animals, and illegal items are also not permitted.
Customers are responsible for ensuring that the contents of their storage units and any items provided for transport comply with our conditions and do not present a risk. If prohibited or hazardous materials are discovered, Storage Alperton reserves the right to take appropriate action to protect health and safety, including refusal to store or transport such items.
Risk Assessment and Control Measures
Storage Alperton will carry out regular risk assessments to identify significant hazards associated with storage, removals, vehicle movements, loading and unloading, working at height, and the use of equipment. Reasonable control measures will be implemented to reduce risks as far as is practical.
Control measures may include restricted access to certain areas, the use of personal protective equipment where appropriate, safe operating procedures, and routine inspection of facilities, vehicles, and equipment. Risk assessments will be reviewed periodically and following any incident or significant change in operations.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
Storage Alperton maintains procedures for fire safety and other emergencies to protect everyone on site. Fire detection and fire-fighting equipment will be installed and maintained in accordance with relevant requirements. Fire exits and escape routes must be kept clear at all times, and emergency signage must be observed.
Customers, visitors, and employees must familiarise themselves with the location of exits, assembly points, and alarm call points. In the event of an emergency, all persons on site must follow staff instructions, evacuate promptly when required, and must not use lifts if a fire alarm is sounding.
Training, Information, and Supervision
Storage Alperton will provide employees with appropriate health and safety training relevant to their role, including site safety rules, manual handling, use of lifting and moving equipment, vehicle safety, and emergency procedures. Refresher training will be provided when required, and additional training will be delivered when new risks or processes are identified.
Information on health and safety arrangements will be made available to employees, customers, and contractors through signage, written guidance, and verbal instruction. Supervisors will monitor working practices to ensure that procedures are being followed and that standards are maintained.
Contractors and Third Parties
Contractors and third-party service providers working on site must comply with this policy and with any additional safety instructions and site rules issued by Storage Alperton. Contractors are expected to conduct their own risk assessments for the work they carry out and to provide competent personnel and suitable equipment.
Where removal or logistics partners are used, Storage Alperton will take reasonable steps to ensure that safety standards are compatible with our own and that handling and transportation of goods are carried out in a safe and responsible manner.
Monitoring, Review, and Policy Communication
Storage Alperton will monitor health and safety performance through incident reporting, inspections, audits, and feedback from staff and customers. Findings will be used to improve systems, address trends, and update procedures. This policy will be reviewed regularly and revised when necessary to reflect changes in operations or in relevant legislation.
This Health and Safety Policy is communicated to all employees and is available to customers, visitors, and contractors on request. By using our storage facilities and associated services, all parties agree to cooperate with Storage Alperton in maintaining a safe and healthy environment.
